Guest Column: Resource Protection for Idaho Crime Victims | Opinion

Every year, Idahoans and Americans across our country raise awareness about supporting crime victims and increase efforts to reduce crime and honor victims and their advocates. National Crime Victims’ Week in April and Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October are some of the most important opportunities to reflect on progress and advance our shared purpose. However, two efforts I have joined in recent months to secure funding for victim assistance serve as a reminder that we must work vigilantly every day to ensure that the resources dedicated to victim recovery reach those who are victims they should help.

In 1984, Congress passed the Victims of Crimes Act, known as VOCA, which established the Crime Victims Fund (CVF). The CVF provides grants to states to cover the cost of victim rescue resources, including counseling, legal assistance, funeral costs and more. The funds will be distributed across thousands of agencies that support victims of crime. The CVF is a tax-neutral fund; The remainder consists of fines and penalties collected through federal criminal convictions, deferred prosecution and non-prosecution agreements, and settlements.
