Gunman on the run after two people were shot dead at a house in Rye, man charged with murdering two people in Sydney

A gunman is on the run and two people are dead after they were found with fatal gunshot wounds in a suburban home.

Homicide detectives are investigating after reports of a fight between a group of people at a house in Rye on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula just after 4am on Monday.

Police believe a man and a woman entered the home and became involved in an argument with residents.

The 29-year-old man who lived in the home and a visiting woman – who has yet to be formally identified – were found with gunshot wounds.

“Despite the best efforts of emergency services to revive the couple, they were pronounced dead at the scene,” police said.

Another man left the home before police arrived, and the search for the shooter is ongoing.

Homicide detectives are interested in speaking to anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage relating to the incident.

Meanwhile, in western Sydney, a man has been charged with murder after the bodies of an elderly couple were found in a takeaway shop.

Officers were called to the store in Oxford Street, Cambridge Park, near Penrith, after an attack was reported at around 9.40am on Saturday.

The couple, aged in their 60s, were found with “significant injuries” after a citizen alerted police.

A 31-year-old man was arrested at a home in Canley Heights, 30km west of the CBD, at around 12.30pm on Sunday.

All three people involved were known to each other, police said.

The man was taken to Fairfield Police Station where he was charged with two counts of murder.

He was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Magistrates Court later on Sunday.

Detective Superintendent Michael Cantrell said officers arrived at a “confrontational crime scene”.

“Obviously it’s about the welfare of our officers and we have systems in place to do that,” he told reporters in Sydney on Saturday.

Supt Cantrell said footage possibly related to the incident had been posted on social media.

“I am aware that there is footage, and it is on social media, and we are looking into that and looking at all lines of inquiry,” he said.
