Gypsy-Rose Blanchard’s first year of freedom

Nearing the first anniversary of her release from prison, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard’s life is very different than it was a year ago. Among other things, she has already published two books about her infamous childhood, found new love and embraced the joys and challenges of being a mother-to-be. She hasn’t shied away from sharing every step with both supportive fans and curious observers.

Attention has been regularly focused on Blanchard, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for her role in orchestrating the 2015 murder of her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard. Experts have since suggested that Dee Dee likely suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental disorder in which a caregiver makes someone sick or gives the illusion of illness to get attention. She led doctors and the public to believe that Gypsy-Rose suffered from a number of illnesses including asthma, leukemia and muscular dystrophy, which subjected the healthy young girl to unnecessary treatments and procedures.

The case gained widespread national notoriety and became the subject of the 2019 Hulu miniseries The law with Joey King as Gypsy-Rose and Patricia Arquette as Dee Dee. Unsurprisingly, the announcement that Gypsy-Rose would be paroled in September 2023 after eight and a half years behind bars caused a stir about what her life would mean outside of prison.

Blanchard was released in the early morning of December 28, 2023. Here’s a look at the 33-year-old’s tumultuous year since then and the events that dominated the headlines.
