Harris campaign is still soliciting donations weeks after massive defeat to Trump

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign is still looking for donations weeks after losing the election to President-elect Trump.

“As Trump nominates MAGA loyalists left and right, there is nothing more important than ensuring we can fight back and hold him accountable,” said an email from Kamala headquarters sent last week to the New York Post was sent. “That’s why we need you today. Yes, today.”

“Our records indicate that you have not yet committed to supporting our Harris Fight Fund program,” the email continued, according to the New York Post. “We know that the elections did not go as we had hoped, but we are not giving in.”

Trump was declared the winner of the presidential election last month, ultimately securing 312 electoral votes to Harris’ 226, as well as a majority of the electoral votes. The election also saw the Republican Party retake the Senate and retain control of the House of Representatives.

However, weeks after the election, emails with requests for donations continue to land in supporters’ inboxes.

“Even a quick donation of $50 is enough to help us in this fight,” it said in a fundraising email to donors two weeks after the election, according to Politico. “And with only a few hours left today to reach our goal, NOW is the best time to boost your support.”

“Please don’t click away,” another email said, the source said.

MSNBC did not know that the Harris campaign had donated $500,000 to Al Sharpton’s group in advance of a friendly interview

The Harris campaign began in early August after President Biden dropped out of the race amid growing concerns about his mental capacity and age. The Harris campaign has raised about $1.4 billion in her few months as the Democratic nominee, but is reportedly facing $20 million in debt, according to sources who spoke to Politico.

The campaign denied outstanding debts as of Election Day and will not disclose debts owed in reports to the Federal Election Commission this month, the outlet reported.

The Harris campaign came under scrutiny shortly after Election Day when reports spread that the campaign paid $1 million to Oprah Winfrey’s production company for a campaign event, $500,000 million in private jets and $500,000 in advance of a friendly interview US dollars to Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network nonprofit organization paid MSNBC and other expenses.

It’s not uncommon for political candidates to end a campaign in debt, but some Democrats noted that repeated emails urging voters to donate after the election were likely to erode trust.

“I understand that the Harris campaign is in a very difficult position given the debt that they have, and so sometimes you just have to make practical decisions,” Mike Nellis, founder of the Democratic digital company Authentic, told Politico. “But yeah, I think something like that undermines trust.”

“Getting fundraising requests after a candidate has lost, when he admits he is still millions of dollars in debt after gambling away over a billion dollars… is particularly galling,” Democratic strategist Jon Reinish told the New York Post.

A Harris campaign official told Politico that post-election fundraising emails will no longer ask donors to give more than they did during the campaign cycle, and that some of the fundraising was necessary to effectively end the campaign and at the same time ensuring the retention of some employees in this mission.

How Kamala Harris’ failed 2024 presidential bid reflects her ill-fated 2020 campaign

As reports spread last month that the campaign was in debt, Trump trolled the Harris team on social media and urged MAGA supporters to “do everything we can do to help them.”

“I am very surprised that the Democrats, who fought a hard and valiant fight in the 2020 presidential election and raised a record amount, did not have a lot of money left over.” Trump posted on X days after last month’s election.

“Now they are being pressured by vendors and others. Whatever we can do to help them during this difficult time, I would strongly recommend that we do so as a party and in the interest of the much-needed UNITY,” he continued. “We’ve got this.” There’s a lot of money left over because our biggest asset in the campaign was earned media, and that doesn’t cost much.
