The competition started the nationwide initiative of DPR to sew and collect 38,000 for those who were buried in Pūowaina for the Memorial Day.

Pūowaina is of significant importance because after the first Memorial Day Ceremony in 1949 it was awarded the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Since then, the city has undertaken to place freshness of each of the 38,000 graves for service members who live in the cemetery.
