‘He brought so much joy’: Village People singer supports Trump’s ‘YMCA’ use

Donald Trump’s love for the Village People is well-documented, as is the group’s resistance to tracks like “YMCA” and “Macho Man” being played at Trump rallies. The disco group’s co-founder, Victor Willis, pushed back against that opposition during a visit to Fox News on Thursday.

Willis told the hosts of “Fox & Friends First” that he relented from his years-long opposition to Trump’s use of their hits after seeing how much “joy for the American people” the song brought to events.

“I’ve decided to allow the president-elect to continue using ‘YMCA’ because he really, really seems to like the song,” he said. “So I decided to contact BMI and tell them not to terminate his license for political use since he seemed to be giving the American people so much joy with his use of ‘YMCA.’

Trump’s use of the track and the two-fisted jerky dance became a trend among Republican TikTok users celebrating his election victory. Speaking to Fox, Willis noted that the title’s airings have increased significantly in recent weeks. The song topped the Billboard Dance/Electronic charts for the week of November 17th.

The grateful singer initially balked at the idea of performing at Trump’s inauguration for fear of an implicit endorsement on Thursday, but refused to rule out the move entirely.

“The president-elect has done so much for YMCA. and brought so much joy to so many people, the song actually went back to number one,” said Willis. “So if he asked the Village People to perform the song live for him, we would have to seriously consider it.”
