Health insurance information for the open enrollment period

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – As the country anticipates possible changes to health care policy under a Trump presidency, Californians are examining their options for affordable insurance. Navigating the healthcare system can be overwhelming for many, but Covered California’s website can help simplify the process. Open enrollment is currently ongoing.

What is insured in California?

Covered California is the state’s Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance marketplace where residents can shop, compare and purchase health insurance online.

“We allow every Californian who needs health insurance – for themselves or their family – to compare options,” said Jessica Altman, executive director of Covered California. The program ensures access to health care regardless of pre-existing conditions. 90% of participants receive financial assistance to make their plans more affordable.

Not insured, but entitled: Closing the gap

According to Altman, 127,000 people in San Diego County alone currently receive their health insurance through Covered California. However, she estimates that an additional 100,000 uninsured residents are eligible for low-cost or even free health insurance.

“Any pre-existing conditions, nothing like that, would ever disqualify you from coverage or cause you to pay more for coverage,” Altman reassured.

New coverage options for DACA recipients

For the first time, DACA recipients are now eligible for health insurance through Covered California. According to Altman, this inclusion aims to expand access and reduce the number of uninsured Californians.

Possible effects under a Trump presidency

When asked about the potential impact of a Trump presidency on California covered, Altman noted that the program’s focus remains on enrolling as many residents as possible.

“What we will be watching most is whether the federal government will continue to support affordability,” Altman said.

While it’s too early to predict any specific changes or cuts, she said they remain committed to providing Californians the resources they need to secure insurance coverage and urged interested parties to get theirs website to visit.

Important registration deadlines

Open enrollment for Covered California is now open and runs through January 31st. However, for your coverage to begin on January 1st, you must register by December 31st.
