Here’s how to keep your packages safe this holiday season

‘Tis the season for porch pirates. These Christmas criminals are often bold in Central Texas, stealing gifts and other packages from people’s front doors, often in broad daylight.

“We notice it a lot more this time of year because so many people are shopping online for the holiday season,” said Ashlee Bradshaw, public information specialist with the Kyle Police Department.

Last year, more than 120 million packages were stolen in the U.S., with an estimated $16 billion lost to porch pirates.

Amazon spokesman Richard Rocha says there is no rhyme or reason to what thieves would take.

“There’s not really a lot of information on a package, especially when it’s delivered. So we think these people are just taking advantage of the opportunity,” Rocha said.

Amazon emphasizes that the vast majority of packages reach customers safely.

A recent study found that about a third of stolen packages come from Amazon, followed by USPS, FedEx, UPS and grocery delivery.

“They just grab it and hope that what they have is something valuable,” Bradshaw said.

Kyle Police say they are actively working to catch these real Grinches in the act.

“We are out there regularly and proactively patrol the neighborhoods. We also deployed our group of volunteers called Citizens on Patrol. They’re out there and alert,” Bradshaw said.

But police say there’s a lot you can do to prevent thefts in the first place.

First, try to have your package delivered at home. Companies like UPS and Amazon also offer the option to pick up your package at a designated secure location. And if that’s not an option, consider having it delivered to a less visible location on your property.

“Whether that’s under a chair or behind a plant somewhere, it’s not as visible to the eye,” Bradshaw said.

Lights and cameras are also a great way to not only deter porch pirates, but also catch them in the act when they strike.

“So the footage will definitely help us identify these individuals and aid the investigative process,” Bradshaw said.

If you experience a package theft, you should definitely report it to the local police and send along a video. Then be sure to report it to the seller or carrier.

“Call customer service. We will work with them to find out what works best for them and how we can provide a solution,” Rocha said.

If you don’t get your money back, you can try filing an insurance claim. And of course, be sure to inform your neighbors so they can keep an eye out.

“We always encourage neighbors to look out for each other and to really keep their eyes open and be vigilant this time of year,” Bradshaw said.

Kyle Police have some additional tips to ensure your packages don’t get stolen this holiday season:

  • Demand that the packages you deliver be delivered in discreet packaging, especially if they come from a luxury brand.
  • Adjust delivery times to ensure you are home when the items arrive
  • Have packages delivered to a friend’s home, your place of work, or even the store where you purchased it if the option is available
  • Be sure to track your package and consider a package locker for maximum security
