Hickman Mills students learn media literacy strategies

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Students in the Hickman Mills School District are learning valuable media literacy lessons while focusing on recognizing what is true and what is not.

These days the answer to almost everything lies on a cell phone or computer. Finding out the information displayed is often easier said than done.

On Thursday, students helped create their own media literacy curriculum. Youth met with the Mid-Continent Public Library’s Digital Innovation Department and discussed better ways to fact-check and evaluate sources.

“We can’t just focus on adults, we really need teenagers of our species to learn about these topics because they are the future and are using these platforms in ways we can’t even imagine,” says Erin, manager for Mid-Continent Public Library digital innovation, Kennedy said.

Kennedy is one of several teachers in the library helping students. She said everything the students learn will be critically important as they grow up.

Ruskin High School student Donald Finley said the best way to tell whether something is true or false on social media is to pay attention.

“Just watch what I see,” Finley said. “When I see something, I look closely and look at the details.”
