Hofstra gets two wins on Saturday

New York, NY/Garden City, NY Kyle Mosher, Chase LiardiAnd Frank Volpe each went 2-0 while Nicholas Miller was 2-1 as Hofstra won two of three doubleheaders on Saturday. The Pride picked up an EIWA win over Morgan State (27-19) and a win over Nassau Community College (45-4) at Nassau’s Main Gym. Hofstra started the day with a 32-10 loss at Columbia.

Hofstra was 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the EIWA this season. Columbia is 2-2, while Morgan State is 2-8 overall and 0-5 in the EIWA. Nassau CC is 0-3.

In Hofstra’s opening fight at Columbia, Mosher, Liardi and Jurius Clark won victories for the Pride. Mosher started the day well with a 4-1 win at 165 pounds over No. 27 Cesar Alvan. However, Columbia would win the next five weights to take a 23-3 lead. The Lions scored two falls and a technical fall in the run to take control. Liardi got the Pride back on the winning list at 133 with a 12-3 decision over Boris Witmer. But Columbia picked up victories at 141 and 149 by nationally ranked wrestlers before Clark closed out the match with a 5-4 decision at 157 pounds over Dominic Rossetti.

Against Morgan State, Hofstra rattled off five straight wins after losing the first weight class in the fall. Liardi (133) started the race with an important decision Justin Hoyle (141) followed with a dive to stop the Pride. Noah Tapia (decision) at 149, Volpe (major decision) at 157 and Mosher (fall) ended the Pride’s winning streak, which led 23-6 after the 165-pound bout. The Bears kept things interesting with wins at 174 and 184 and got within 10 points with two weights remaining, 23-13. But Miller made a key decision against Cameron Johnson, sealing the Pride’s victory.

Hofstra overtook the Lions of Nassau CC, winning nine of the 10 matches and one extra match. Seven of the eight weights won by the Pride were bonus point victories, including falls Matthew Waddell (174), Gavin Proffitt (184) and Miller (197). Track ship (141) and Volpe (157) added technical declines, while Danny Church (285) and Dylan Zenion (149) achieved important decisions. Dylan Acevedo won his match via forfeit. In the additional game, which did not count towards the team ranking, Teague Strobel took a 16-14 decision over Shane Dobbins.

Hofstra will take a long break before returning to action on Jan. 9 at Binghamton with a start time of 2 p.m.
