How did this car end up on a utility pole in Bowdoin, Maine?

I have so many questions and no answers as to how exactly this car managed to trap the top of a utility pole underneath itself and lift three of its wheels off the ground.

This photo was posted to Central Maine Power’s Facebook page Thursday morning. It shows a severed utility pole with the top half wedged under this car while the bottom half remains firmly in the ground. The power cables also fell and got caught in the mess.

The Facebook post did not contain any information about the accident other than a warning to drivers that snow and ice can lead to dangerous road conditions.

I’m assuming the driver of this car is OK as I don’t think CMP would have posted this otherwise.

I have no knowledge of accident reconstruction and investigation, but I’ll try anyway.

It looks to me like the driver lost control in the sharp S-curve that you can see behind the emergency vehicles. The car then crashed into the utility pole, causing the top half to separate and be dragged to the ground by the wires attached to it, trapping the top of the pole under the front end of the car and lifting it off the ground, leaving only the left rear tire on it touched the pavement.

Again, I’m no expert here, but it sounds logical to me.

Now that we’ve had our first winter storm in parts of Maine, this is a good reminder to take it slow when the roads are covered in snow and ice.
