How homeowners and renters can prepare for cold temperatures

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – The weather is cooler and there are even colder temperatures on the horizon.

That’s why you should be prepared for these temperatures and know how to better prepare your home.

Tison Reno, energy efficiency manager at Entergy, said, “Yes, it is definitely very important to prepare a home for cold weather. Lowering the thermostat to 68°C or perhaps slightly lower can help reduce energy consumption. Also look for air gaps around windows or doors and seal them to ensure cold air doesn’t get in. That helps a lot.”

Colder temperatures can have a bigger impact on other things than just your comfort in your home. It can also cause problems with your plumbing if proper precautions are not taken.

Reno also said, “The same goes for insulating pipes. They can go a long way in preventing frozen pipes from bursting and causing many problems down the road.”

One way to cook economically is to set the thermostat to the right temperature and save extra money.

Will Johnson, a maintenance worker at a local apartment complex in Jackson, said, “It costs almost $700 because you run your heater at 75 to 80 degrees. And so the heat tries to keep up with the outside temperature, which it is not designed for. It’s designed to make you feel comfortable.”

Entergy will distribute free energy efficiency kits at the Magic of Lights Show in Brandon on December 12th and 19th.
