How much snow fell in North Carolina on Monday evening?

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The first snow in nearly three years hit parts of the Piedmont Monday night into Tuesday morning, but not all. The result was some beautiful winter scenes in many areas, but also some chaos on local highways.

Who saw the most snow and who was left out? Let’s take a look at the reports we can reliably find.

More snow in the south and west

A band of moderate to heavy snow formed around midnight and spread south and west across Piedmont. A broad swath of over 1 inch of snow spread from Iredell to Davie counties, extending further south toward Rowan, Montgomery and Randolph counties. Overall, 1 to 2 inches of snow fell in these areas due to the heavier snow band.

Across the Triad, some snow still fell in areas north of I-40. About half an inch was seen across much of Forsyth County and parts of Guilford County. The same goes for Yadkin County, Surry County and Stokes County.

Snow was a little more difficult to get as the drier air was more prevalent in Alamance County, Rockingham County and Caswell County. Little to no snow also fell in the Raleigh area.

First snow in 1,038 days!

For parts of the area, it was the first snowfall since January 2022. That’s almost three years. Obviously this isn’t a major snowfall for our area, but it is notable given our snow drought. This is the second longest snow drought on record for our part of North Carolina.

Winter forecast

Just because we had a cold and snowy week doesn’t mean it will stay that way all winter. Remember that a long-term forecast is a comprehensive look at the pattern over a three to four month period. Seasons have ups and downs.
