How to eliminate health inequalities for people with disabilities

Globally, the mortality rate of people with disabilities is 2.24 times higher than that of people without disabilities. And while people with disabilities often have greater health care needs, they also face increasing barriers to care. Dr. McKinsey’s Mona Hammami and co-authors write that people with disabilities are more likely to report the following in the course of patient care:

  • Skipping or delaying care due to cost
  • Have difficulty securing transportation to a healthcare facility
  • encounter inaccessible facilities
  • Meeting workforces with inadequate skills or lack of flexibility to provide quality care

This International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPD) examines inequalities in patient care, possible interventions to overcome them and a three-tiered approach to reducing inequalities between communicable and non-communicable diseases. Then read these insights to learn more about inclusivity in care and everyday life.
