How to get a Real ID and when you need it

When do you have to have a real ID to fly?

The time for a real ID is getting closer and closer. In fact, you have less than six months to get one.

As the deadline approaches, here’s everything you need to know about why you need a Real ID and what you need to keep it secure.

When is a Real ID required to fly?

Real ID will be required in New Jersey starting May 7, 2025.

This will stop you from flying, but not from driving. The standard New Jersey driver’s license can still be used for driving.

Do you need a Real ID to fly in the US?

The only other acceptable forms of identification for flying are a U.S. passport or government-approved ID. You also need the real ID to enter federal facilities and nuclear power plants.

You can get real ID cards by making an appointment on the website.

What do you need to get a Real ID?

There are three things you need before getting your Real ID.

You need two forms of residential address. This includes a valid NJ driver’s license/non-driver ID, utility or credit card bill issued within the last 90 days, checking or savings account statement from a bank or credit card company issued within the last 60 days, original, unexpired Lease or rental agreement, a tax certificate, statement or receipt or letter from the IRS or tax office within the past year, first class mail from a government agency within the past six months and, if under 18 years old, a statement from parent or legal guardian attestation of the applicant’s address.

You will also need proof of a full social security number. This includes a Social Security card, a pay stub with your name and full Social Security number, a W-2 or 1099 form issued within the last year, or if you know your Social Security number and provide it on the application, and the Motor Vehicle Commission will do so electronically check.

You will also need your birth certificate or an unexpired US passport. If you are not a US citizen, you will need to bring other forms.

What is a Real ID?

REAL ID is the new federal requirement for state-issued driver’s licenses and non-driver ID cards to prevent fraudulent identification.

Do I need a regular license?

If you have a Real ID, it will serve as your New Jersey driver’s license. A Real ID serves as a NJ driver’s license, but a NJ driver’s license does not function as a Real ID.

Can I travel to Mexico with a Real ID?

According to Homeland Security, no. REAL ID cards cannot be used to cross borders into Canada, Mexico or other international travel.

How do you know if you have a real ID?

REAL ID compliant cards have one of the following markings at the top of the card. If the card does not have any of these markings, it is not REAL ID compatible and will not be accepted as proof of identity for boarding commercial aircraft.
