How to get ePAN with QR code for free before the launch of PAN 2.0 | Technology News

The Indian government recently announced the Permanent Account Number (PAN) 2.0, an updated version of the PAN that is more secure and also includes a QR code. Although the QR code on PAN was introduced back in 2017-18, many users still have an older PAN without a QR code.

Since there are still a few months left until the official launch of PAN 2.0, here are detailed instructions on how to apply for a new PAN 1.0 with a QR code.

What is the purpose of a QR code on a PAN card?

According to the Ministry of Finance, a special QR code scanner can verify the photo, signature, name, parent’s name and date of birth of the PAN holder, thereby greatly facilitating the authentication of the data displayed on the physical PAN card. Please note that your existing PAN card without a QR code will still remain valid and applying for a PAN with a QR code is only possible for those who need one and is not mandatory.

To apply for an updated PAN 1.0 with a QR code, one needs PAN details, a phone number and the email ID associated with that specific PAN. Depending on the source of the application, PAN 1.0 needs to be applied for via NSDL or UTIITSL and users have the option of getting only ePAN with QR or physical PAN card with QR code.

Although downloading the ePAN does not cost any money for those whose PAN was issued within the last month, users with older PANs will have to pay Rs 8.26 to get an ePAN with QR code. To get a physical PAN with a QR code, one also has to pay 50 rupees. ePAN with QR Code is in PDF format and is password protected for additional security.
