How to keep the PS1 home screen and 30th anniversary themes

The year 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the mighty PlayStation, which first launched in Japan on December 3, 1994. Unsurprisingly, Sony has perhaps pulled out all the stops to celebrate the occasion, with limited edition consoles and a huge PS Store sale with almost 500 discounts and some PlayStation Stars 30th anniversary challenges.

PlayStation 5 Owners may also have noticed that their consoles are displaying the classic PS1 home screen when first booted up for a limited period of time. You can also choose between a range of dynamic themes inspired by the four PlayStation consoles prior to the PS5, as well as a special 30th anniversary theme.

The theme “30. Anniversary” is selected by default. However, if players navigate the settings menuYou will now see a new option at the top called PlayStation 30th anniversary. From here if they select that Look and sound Option, you can choose between the five available dynamic themes using a drop-down menu or disable dynamic themes completely by selecting “Off”. It’s worth noting that these themes not only change the look of the PS5 dashboard, but also some of the sounds, which should be a major nostalgia trip for older gamers.

Unfortunately, the PS1 home screen and 30th anniversary themes are currently only available for a limited time. Sony hasn’t announced exactly when they will be removed, but the general consensus is that they will be gone by January. However, the disconnection from the internet and the change to the console’s internal clock suggest that Sony plans to remove these via update, ie PS5 owners can keep the PS1 home screen and 30th anniversary themes by opting out of all future software updates. Of course, this is a somewhat extreme option just to store a few cosmetics, and probably not an option for those who play online or buy their games digitally. If that’s the case, players can only hope that Sony decides to keep the themes even after the 30th anniversary celebrations end.
