How to Prepare for a Winter Storm – 9&10 News

Winter weather is definitely here and 9&10 News has some tips on how to stay safe. Check out the links below or read the tips and be sure to visit our weather page for the latest information on snow and temperatures.

Here are some tips from Liz Reimink, former emergency management director for Mason County, that we originally conducted in December 2022.

– Make sure you have enough food, even things you can easily prepare.

– Make sure you have extra blankets in case of a power outage. If you already have them, you’ll know where they are so you can easily find and use them.

– “If you have a generator, make sure it has already been serviced this season and you know where you are going to put it,” Reimink said. “Outside, not in your house, not even in your garage. Keep it outside and well ventilated.”

– Fireplaces and wood stoves should be well maintained before use.

– DO NOT use your oven as an alternative heating source, Reimink said. “Of course, carbon monoxide is usually our biggest threat during a prolonged power outage.”

– “Plan ahead and be prepared. If you have to travel, do it safely,” Reimink said. “But the best solution will be to weather the storm at home and make preparations now.”
