How to protect your plants from frost

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – As temperatures drop into double digits, there could be a chance of frost in Atlanta Saturday morning.

Local nurseries and garden centers were busy on Black Friday.

At Atlantis Hydroponics in West Midtown, employees stocked items to protect gardens from frost.

Plant specialist Christopher Stanfield emphasized the importance of protecting plants from frost.

“You should put some extra mulch on your garden bed,” he said. “This will keep the heat trapped in the soil and hopefully give your plants a fighting chance to survive the frost.”

Stanfield also added that some plants are more susceptible to frost in this winter weather.

“Water before it freezes,” he said. “This will help insulate the roots a bit and keep the temperature out.”

Over at Lowe’s in Atlanta’s Edgewood neighborhood, antifreeze wipes flew off the shelves as customers prepared for the chilly conditions.

Sally McGwire is the store’s assistant manager.

“The houseplants are a must,” she said. “Annual plants just need to be watered and covered with a frost cloth.”

Shoppers like Kristy Lambert took the cold snap seriously. As she looked for a Christmas tree with her children, she thought about the sudden change in the weather.

“About a week ago we were nice and warm and cozy,” Lambert said. “Yesterday we were at Thanksgiving and suddenly it was freezing cold again.”
