How to stay safe on slippery roads in central Illinois

PEORIA (25News Now) – Extra caution is required when driving in the winter as ice and snow can affect traction and increase the risk of an accident.

Doug Burgess, the owner of Burgess Driving School, said many drivers fail to adjust their habits.

“One of the biggest mistakes is that they don’t adapt to the conditions,” Burgess explained. “They don’t slow down, they don’t increase the distance from other cars and they don’t start doing things they normally do before, like slowing down. Do you see a red light in front of you? Start slowing down much earlier to buy yourself more time.”

Burgess shared some important safety tips that drivers should keep in mind while on the road.

Slow: Reduced traction means less control. Therefore, adapt your speed to the road conditions.

Increase space: Give yourself more space between vehicles for safer stops.

Plan ahead: Leave early to allow plenty of time and pack an emergency kit with water, blankets and other essentials.

Burgess also advised against using cruise control because it limits the driver’s ability to react quickly. “You want your foot to be ready to hit the brake when you need it,” he said.

By adjusting driving habits and preparing for emergencies, drivers can stay safe on the roads this winter.
