Instagram has introduced several important changes and updates in recent months, including new features and privacy measures.

A few months ago, the social media site announced Profile Cards: users would no longer have to enter usernames to find a mutual or new connection; Now you can set up a profile card that makes you easy to find with a custom QR code.

The new feature is similar to the way digital payment apps like Venmo and Cash App allow users to share profiles. The Instagram version is a two-sided profile card with one side for the scannable QR code and the other side with your IG handle, profile picture, a short bio and a song of your choice.

Instagram likens the new update to the digital version of a business card, which you can design to include contact links and showcase your bio “in an elegant digital package.” It’s a great way to network and “make new contacts,” Instagram added, and – by adding a favorite song – make new friends with similar interests.

How to customize your own IG profile card

  • Go to your profile and tap Share Profile. Your own profile card will automatically appear. (If it doesn’t appear, try again later as the feature is rolling out globally.)
  • Click the pencil icon in the top right corner to edit elements of your profile. Here you can update the information in your profile, add favorite music and contact/project links, and change the wallpaper.
• Share your profile card using the sharing options below the card

This upgrade will be helpful for content creators, freelancers, and small businesses, but it’s not as obvious how it can be helpful for users who only use Instagram as a social media platform – aside from further professionalizing casual interactions. Ultimately, this shows how many social media platforms encourage users to develop their personal brands.
