How to watch: Eileen O’Neill Burke will be sworn in as Cook County state’s attorney Monday morning

CHICAGO— Eileen O’Neill Burke is scheduled to be sworn in as Cook County’s new district attorney Monday morning after winning the race with more than twice as many votes as her Republican challenger.

The seat was open for the first time in 16 years O’Neill Burke scored about 67.4% of the total votes, compared to 28.2% Bob Fiorettia civil rights attorney and former Chicago city councilman.

She replaces outgoing District Attorney Kim Foxx Resigned after two terms.

O’Neill Burke won the support of numerous unions, elected officials, lawyers and retired co-chairs of judicial committees. During her campaign, she said her agenda would focus on getting guns off the streets and addressing the root causes of crime.

She also addressed the controversy End of cash bail in Illinoisciting “dueling data” on its effectiveness, and she vowed her office would be more transparent about the impact of eliminating bail.

“I want to take a closer look at the DA’s data, and if I come into office, that’s exactly what we would do, and if I conclude that we are not safer or that we are safer, we will go and find out “What works and what doesn’t,” she said.

O’Neill Burke promised to publish a weekly list of cases in which prosecutors sought to have defendants detained in prison but their request was denied.

O’Neill Burke also said A vote for them was a vote for a safer Chicago.

“On Monday morning we wake up to 25, 30, 40 people being shot, and we become immune to it. This no longer shocks us,” said O’Neill Burke.
