This will be the Spartans’ first game since finishing third at the Maui Invitational last week. Despite suffering a tough loss to the Memphis Tigers, MSU ended its run in the Pacific with a big overtime win over the 12th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. The win certainly gives Michigan State a lot of confidence heading into the conference.

The Spartans will certainly need the production of all their players if they want to improve on their seventh-place finish in last year’s Big Ten season. Offensively, they are led by Jaden Akins, who is averaging 12.9 points per game, while Frankie Fidler and Jase Richardson are the other two players who have averaged double figures so far this season.

The Gophers finished 10th in the 14-team league last season, and while they picked up wins in non-conference games, they still have a lot of work to do to improve their performance from the 2023-24 season. They picked up a win over Bethune-Cookman last Sunday, snapping a two-game losing streak to build some momentum for Big Ten action.

On the hardwood, MSU is 34-9 against Minnesota, even though the Gophers split last year’s season series.
