Here’s a story about women’s college basketball from the Associated Press:

UConn coach Geno Auriemma tied Tara VanDerveer for the most appearances with a school in the AP Top 25 women’s basketball team, while the Huskies remained seventh in Monday’s poll.

Auriemma has now led UConn to 627 survey responses in his 40 years at the school, matching VanDerveer’s mark at Stanford before her retirement. She also ranked 27th in the Ohio State rankings when the Hall of Fame coach led that school before moving to the Cardinal and holds the overall record for appearances in the poll by a coach.

Auriemma surpassed VanDerveer’s NCAA career win record earlier in the season and now has 1,224 wins after his team defeated Providence on Sunday.

After a week in which many schools only played a single game, UCLA, South Carolina and Notre Dame remained the top three teams and the top 18 schools remained unchanged. The Bruins, Gamecocks and Irish each had losses in their only games of the week and won by an average of nearly 41 points. All schools in the country were closed until Friday last week, a chance to recharge for the three-month sprint to the NCAA Tournament.

UCLA received 30 of the 32 first-place votes from a national media panel. South Carolina and Notre Dame each received one. USC, Texas and LSU followed Notre Dame. Maryland was seeded eighth and eventually edged out Michigan State to remain undefeated with Sunday’s 72-66 win.

Oklahoma and Ohio State rounded out the top 10 teams. The Sooners have a busy week ahead, with road games against rival Texas and No. 15 Tennessee. It’s the first SEC road test for Oklahoma and could prove to be a high-scoring game.

Move

Michigan State fell two spots to No. 21 after losing to Maryland, which moved Alabama and California both up one spot. Michigan’s loss at USC dropped the Wolverines one spot to 24th, while Iowa moved up to 23rd.

home Sweet Home

South Carolina extended its home winning streak to 65 games with a victory over Wofford on Sunday. The Gamecocks are four wins short of reaching the top five home series of all time. Baylor, UConn and Tennessee all won 69 straight home games, tying them for the fourth-longest tie ever in Division I history. The Huskies are in the top two spots with 99 and 98 games respectively. Stanford is third (82).

Breakdown of the conference

The Southeastern Conference finished 2024 with eight teams in the poll and tied for the top spot for the second straight year. The Big Ten is next with seven. The ACC has six, while the Big 12 has three and the Big East has one.
