Humidifiers can be helpful when used correctly

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The Ozarks are experiencing very dry air, meaning your skin and your houseplants may look run down in the coming days.

Humidifiers are popular tools for combating dry air, relieving congestion, and even reducing static electricity. However, experts emphasize the importance of proper use to ensure safety and efficiency. Distilled water is primarily recommended for humidifiers. Distilled water is free of contaminants such as minerals and bacteria that can accumulate in tap water.

Using tap water can lead to the formation of bacteria or mold, which can then become airborne when the machine is in use.

Additionally, humidifiers should be cleaned daily. Regular cleaning ensures healthier air and extends the life of the humidifier.

“You have to clean every part of this machine every day if you can,” explained Leigha McKinney, injury prevention specialist at Mercy Hospital.

Humidifiers can pose safety concerns, especially for households with children.

McKinney recommends placing the device at least three to five feet above the ground to keep it out of the reach of children.

The altitude also helps distribute that moisture into the air,” adds McKinney.

While many people leave humidifiers running overnight, McKinney warns against this practice, especially with hot mist humidifiers.

“Water and electricity are usually not friends. That’s why we want to make sure we’re unplugged because it can be a disaster if there’s a fire. Additionally, leaving the device plugged in for long periods of time can cause excess moisture,” says McKinney.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 50%.

If the humidity is above 50 percent, the risk of mold formation increases. A hygrometer or humidifier with a built-in hygrostat can be used to monitor humidity.

Invest in a saline nasal spray if you don’t want to deal with cleaning a humidifier every day.
