Idaho Homeowners Property Taxes Due Dec. 20 • Idaho Capital So

The deadline for Idaho homeowners to pay their property taxes is December 20th.

Under Idaho lawProperty tax can be paid in full or in half. If paid in half, the first half of the property tax is due by December 20th, and a grace period is extended to June 20th to pay the second half without interest or penalties if the first half is paid in full.

According to the Ada County Treasurer’s Office, if the first half of the property tax is not paid in full by Dec. 20, late payment interest and late payment interest will be assessed on the balance due.

For many homeowners with a mortgage, property taxes are automatically paid off through regular mortgage payments. If homeowners are unsure about how their property taxes will be paid, they can call their mortgage lender or local tax office.

County treasurers are required to mail property tax notices by the fourth Monday in November, so many Idaho homeowners will receive their property tax notices this week.

Idaho’s House Bill 292 provides a tax credit for property taxes

The Idaho Legislature cut property taxes through House Bill 292that lawmakers passed during the 2023 legislative session. Under the law, homeowners who received the homeowner’s exemption by the July deadline will automatically receive a credit on their property tax bill, labeled as Homeowner Property Tax Relief. House Bill 292 would use a surplus in the state budget to reduce property taxes through a so-called surplus eliminater.

But as state officials began reconciling the books for fiscal year 2024 in July, reporting and reconciliation challenges with the state’s massive IT, human resources, finance, procurement and business system, Luma, were delayed preventing the state from identifying an additional $14.5 million As the Idaho Capital Sun previously reported, we will continue to collect revenue by the deadline for this money to be used to reduce property taxes. As a result, the state allocated only $76 million in excess funds to property tax cuts this year — not the roughly $91 million that should have been used for tax cuts.

Because of the missed deadline, the $14.5 million will be added to a possible budget surplus next year, state budget officials said.

In Ada County, homeowners can pay their property taxes at the Ada County Courthouse, 200 W. Front St., by mail or online at adacounty.id.gov/treasurer or call 844-471-7324. Fees apply for credit and debit card transactions online and over the telephone.
Homeowners in other Idaho counties should contact their local treasurer’s office to confirm payment options.
