Incredible moment, 23-year-old Vegas man wakes up from long coma… and his first act will warm your heart

A Las Vegas man has woken up from a three-month coma after a horrific car accident – and one of the first things he did was kiss his mother on the cheek.

Thomas “Eddie” Stanton, 23, was critically injured in a dramatic multi-vehicle crash in downtown Nevada on the night of September 9th.

According to LVMPD, suspected drunk driver Carlos Adan Alvarez, 36, ran a red light before crashing into Stanton’s car “at a high rate of speed” and flipping his own vehicle.

Stanton was in the passenger seat of a 2017 Hyundai Elantra driven by an unidentified 31-year-old man who was also seriously injured, according to police records.

He had been in a coma in hospital since then, but woke up from it on Monday. His grandmother, Arlene Brooks, described his first moments after regaining consciousness.

“When his eyes originally opened from the coma, they were just standing still, but his pupils were moving back and forth. “It’s a long process,” Brooks told CBS affiliate KLAS.

“Thank you to everyone who prayed.” “Some of our prayers are finally being answered,” she added, fighting back tears.

Stanton was able to move just enough to give his mother, Jamie Brooks, a kiss on the cheek, as shown in moving footage.

Jamie Brooks said he suffered multiple fractures as a result of the accident and had organs removed.

His heartbroken relatives must also contend with his employer, Walmart, to maintain his private insurance and prevent him from being moved to “lower care.”

“The insurance company continues to deny his claims,” his mother previously told KLAS. “He is not inferior.”

“He was a victim of the accident,” she added. “But now he is a victim of the health insurance companies who are also harassing him.”

“He has no voice, and I will speak loud and clear for him.”

Brooks said her son’s situation has improved in recent weeks, but they are still fighting for his rights as a patient.

“We’ve had some hiccups due to negligence or neglect, things that weren’t done that impacted his overall health,” Brooks told KLAS this week.

“He has a new family doctor, Dr. T., who works at Valley Hospital and is a very good doctor.”

“I have great confidence in the three doctors who currently work for him.”

“It gave me a new purpose,” Brooks added.

“When this is all said and done, I will make sure I can advocate for patients and teach them their rights and what they are allowed to do and what they are not allowed to do.”

“The way they bully you, intimidate you and almost force you to sign things, do things.”

In lieu of full health insurance, Brooks started a GoFundMe that has so far raised more than $9,000 for medical supplies, braces, bandages and slings.

The publication said Alvarez crashed into Stanton’s Hyundai so hard that the vehicle crashed into “multiple vehicles” that were stopped at the red light.

In total, five people were injured and Alvarez’s 2024 Ford F-150 overturned before landing in the median of the intersection.

Alvarez remained on scene after the accident and “showed signs of impairment,” the police statement said.

He is charged with two counts of drunken driving resulting in bodily harm, two counts of reckless driving resulting in bodily harm and one count of running a red light.

Alvarez was released on bail ahead of his next appearance in a Las Vegas court for a status review of criminal charges on Jan. 14.
