iOS 18.2 has a new queue for Genmoji and more. Here’s how to skip the queue

Apple’s big iOS 18.2 update is almost here, bringing highly anticipated new features like Genmoji and ChatGPT integration. However, there is a special waiting list before you can use certain AI features. Here’s how to skip the line.

New, separate AI waiting list with iOS 18.2

iOS 18.1 used a waitlist for all of its Apple Intelligence features. However, in iOS 18.2 there is a new, standalone waitlist.

Even if you have access to AI in iOS 18.1, you’ll need to join a different waitlist for certain features in 18.2. This includes:

  • Genmoji
  • Picture playground
  • Image wall for iPad

These three AI image generation tools are slowly rolling out to all users.

The slow rollout is a byproduct of Apple’s “Responsible AI” principle of “design with care,” which means:

We take precautions at every stage of our process, including design, model training, feature development, and quality assessment, to determine how our AI tools may be misused or lead to potential harm. Using user feedback, we will continually and proactively improve our AI tools.

Basically, Apple wants to ensure that its features are not used in unintended and potentially harmful ways.

As we saw during the iOS 18.2 beta cycle, user wait times this time around are typically longer than the iOS 18.1 waitlist.

So here is the best way to move forward.

The iOS 18.2 public beta puts you at the top of the waiting list

iOS 18.2 has just released its RC beta (release candidate). This means it is the same software build that is expected to be available to all users upon public launch.

Typically, installing beta software carries the risk of additional bugs or performance issues. But with the RC you install the exact same software that is available to all users.

Thanks to Apple’s free public beta program, you can:

  1. Install the RC version of iOS 18.2 today
  2. Sign up for the AI waiting list
  3. And beat the masses who will join in after widespread adoption

How to join the new AI waitlist

iOS 18.2

To receive the public beta, you must first sign up at beta.apple.com.

After you register your device, you can download iOS 18.2 from the Software Update page in your iPhone’s Settings app.

Once the update is installed, open Genmoji using the emoji keyboard or open the new Image Playground app. At both locations it is possible to jump onto the 18.2 AI waiting list.

You’ll still need an AI-compatible device, and it’s hard to say how long you’ll have to wait – but it will definitely be much faster than the millions who upgrade to iOS 18.2 after the full release.
