Is Nicole Kidman's erotic thriller Babygirl a Christmas movie?

Nicole Kidman’s new erotic thriller “Babygirl” not only contains Christmas scenes, but A24 is releasing the film in theaters on December 25th. So is the R-rated film a Christmas film?

“Let’s hope so,” Kidman, who plays a tech company CEO who has a perverse affair with an intern (Harris Dickinson), told me with a laugh at the film’s premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday. “Someone thinks it’s… A24 is very subversive. They always seem to go against the grain, so maybe (Christmas) is the right time.”

Dickinson added: “It’s absolutely a Christmas movie. I didn’t know it would be like this, but it turned out so I’m going with it.”

Halina Reijn, who wrote and directed the film, said: “Absolutely, as far as I’m concerned.”

“There are Christmas trees, there are Christmas carols. Of course you can’t take everyone to this movie, but you can definitely go with your friends or your partner and have a great time,” she said. “We’ve had screenings where couples said, ‘We’re going home,’ because they were inspired.”

She continued: “Ultimately, sexuality is a metaphor for trying to find your authentic self and not being afraid of that, which is so hard.” I’m actually also writing this film as a letter to myself, to myself To say it myself – even when I come here today, I ask myself, “What will people think of my dress?” Am I thin enough? Am I beautiful enough? Am I normal enough to please everyone?’ I think that’s just wrong. We should just be our unique selves. But it’s easier said than done.”

While Reijn has no plans for a “Babygirl” sequel, she says she has many more ideas for films that deal with “sexual desire, shame, trying to stay true to the beast inside you and becoming more comfortable with darkness to feel”.
