It could snow at Disney World for the first time in almost 50 years

Cold fronts are moving toward Florida, bringing arctic temperatures to the region. But will there be snow and could it impact one of the state’s most popular tourist destinations?

Many forecasters currently don’t think it’s likely that snow will fall in the Sunshine State, with several cold fronts moving through the region over the next week or so.

However, some forecasters say there is a small chance of snow for some Florida residents if conditions are favorable enough.

“If the explosion is strong enough in the second week of January, it is possible that some people in Florida could see snowflakes,” said Michael Doll, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather USA today.

The first cold front will move in on Friday, January 3, triggering “a rapid but brief cooling trend” that will last through Saturday, January 4, according to the National Weather Service.

A second “strong” cold front will move in around the middle of next week. However, the NWS said it expects conditions to remain “mostly dry” across South Florida.

“It is possible that some of the coldest temperatures yet will occur if this fully occurs and follows current model trends,” the agency said.

Accordingly, the cold temperatures in Florida could last until Saturday, January 11th and Sunday, January 12th The Palm Beach Post. In some areas, temperatures could dip below 10°C in northern parts of the state and 20°C in central communities.

According to fan site Inside the Magic, the cold temperatures and possible snow could even cause some Walt Disney World parks to close.

Meteorologists are reportedly unsure if it will snow in Central Florida, but it hasn’t been ruled out. If this were the case, it would be the first time snow fell in the Orlando area since 1977 (less than 1 inch).

Snow could form in the latter part of the cold snap. A low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico could bring enough moisture to bring snow to the region, according to CW affiliate WJXT.

However, meteorologists warn that there is still time for the forecast to change, with the chance of snow still a week away.

What is certain, however, is that these cold fronts will usher in “likely the coolest temperatures South Florida has experienced so far this winter,” according to the NWS.

Snow is not uncommon in the Panhandle and North Florida. Snow fell in the Panhandle almost exactly a year ago, according to Fox affiliate WOFL.

The last measurable snow fell in Florida in January 2014. USA today reported.

Accordingly, no snow has fallen in South Florida since 1977, when snow was first measured there The Palm Beach Post and WOFL.
