Luxury car maker Jaguar has unveiled its new concept electric car, just days after releasing a teaser video that sparked controversy online.

The unveiling of the Type 00 car sparked mixed reactions from social media users. Some applauded the design while others mocked the launch.

Last month, many critics pointed out that the There was no real car in a promotional video announcing the launch of the new car model – but some also praised the company for its boldness and variety.

The automaker, facing the biggest change in its history, released a new logo and a so-called “Social media tease“, before the relaunch as a purely electric brand.

During Monday’s Type 00 event in Miami, Gerry McGovern, the British-based company’s chief creative officer, said he welcomed the attention Jaguar’s new direction had received.

“It has already stirred emotions and will continue to do so,” he said.

“Jaguar has no desire to be loved by everyone.”

Responses to Jaguar’s social media posts about the car ranged from “Go back to the drawing board” and “Hope this doesn’t really turn out” to “Exciting” and “Absolutely stunning.”

Automotive analyst Karl Brauer expressed skepticism about the rebranding.

The company appears to be “sacrificing Jaguar’s past for hopes of a better future,” he told the BBC. “I don’t think it will work.”

Last month, the company urged people to “trust and reserve judgment” on the rebranding of the 102-year-old company.

In early November, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) stopped selling new Jaguar cars in the UK before relaunching as an all-electric brand in 2026.

The company said it was a deliberate move to “create some breathing room” ahead of the launch of the new brand this month.

The company announced it would switch to electric vehicles in 2021 and kept all three of its three UK plants open as part of the strategy.

Jaguar has been the weakest link within the JLR Group, which has been owned by Tata Motors for almost a decade.
