The University of Alabama didn’t reach its goal of competing for a Southeastern Conference championship, but there’s still a chance to reach the College Football Playoff in Kalen DeBoer’s first season.

Alabama fans will be glued to the television on Tuesday as the CFP committee deliberates, but DeBoer was the Crimson Tide’s first head coach since Frank Thomas (1931) to win nine games in his first year as the school’s coach. He led the Tide to the right conclusion to the regular season with a 28-14 victory over Auburn in the Iron Bowl at Saban Field in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama looked sloppy at times compared to its in-state rival; However, it has achieved a victory and that is what matters.

Alabama freshman CB will “have a great career,” according to WR Germie Bernard.

Jalen Milroe, Alabama’s starting quarterback, spoke about the media clutter after the game.

The junior recommended his head coach as the right fit for the program. Milroe appreciates the impact DeBoer has had on him, his teammates and the program throughout this process.

“I will say this, I love Coach DeBoer,” Milroe said. “I love his commitment, his resilience, him as a leader, the role he has fulfilled with the position he is in and always working hard to make sure he is the best coach he is for our football team can be.” … I respect him a lot. He always tries to get the best out of me, pushes me every day to be the best quarterback in the nation that I can be for my football team. Just given his struggles throughout the year, being a head coach in the SEC isn’t easy. He’s just shown tremendous leadership, his pride in coaching and how much he cares about us. I’ll be honest, he’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever been around in terms of love of the game, fun of the game and fun of the process. … Yes, we lost some games, yes, we didn’t play our best, but the joy… I really enjoyed being a quarterback for Coach DeBoer.”

DeBoer has Alabama 9-3 in his first season.

What did we learn about Alabama after its fifth straight Iron Bowl win?

The Tide could find themselves in the CFP or the best bowl game outside of the playoffs. He went through a lot in his transition, but DeBoer coached Alabama to victories over Georgia, LSU, Auburn, South Carolina and Missouri in a grueling SEC.

We’ll see what the CFP committee says on Tuesday, but Milroe stands behind his coach.
