Jerry Jones finally admits he wasted Cowboys fans’ time with Trey Lance

Jerry Jones has chosen Cooper Rush, ending all speculation that the Dallas Cowboys would play Trey Lance this season. Jones said on 105.3 The Fan during his weekly appearance that Rush gave the Cowboys the best chance to win and he was the one moving forward.

And honestly, he’s probably right. Rush was as good a backup quarterback as any, and when Dak Prescott’s injury made the Cowboys’ season bleak, he somehow became a light.

The Cowboys are somehow still in playoff contention, no matter how thin they are, and feel like they want to push to get into the playoffs, even if that means immediately taking a top player in this draft have to win next season.

The worst thing about this season for Dallas is that Jones keeps talking about how young this team is and how he wants to give the young guys a chance to develop. But as the best young option he has, he refuses to play.

It shows he wasted everyone else’s time chasing a player he didn’t actually want to play against.

Once upon a time, Jones said, he made a quick and urgent move for Trey Lance because he didn’t want to miss out on getting a young quarterback prospect since Prescott’s contract was imminent at the time.

He kept everyone guessing about this move in hopes of committing a robbery. Yet we still don’t know why he made this knee-jerk move and what his true motive was.

When Prescott went down with his hamstring injury, effectively ending his season, he had a chance to prove why he was targeting Lance. Instead, Lance was toyed around with in the lineup and the non-commitment of Jones and Mike McCarthy didn’t solve anything either.

Moments like this are why, from an outside perspective, pursuing Lance made sense for Jones and the Cowboys. In an already lost season, he had a chance to either revive his career, prove he could be a useful replacement, or show it was a mistake.

But all we’ve learned this season is that Jones is just as clueless about managing his team as he has been for most of the season. We’ll never know how good he can be as long as Lance is on the Dallas roster.

He wasted his NFL career in Dallas on an opportunity that will never come. And for that, Jones deserves as much blame as McCarthy.
