Kate Middleton’s title was almost given to this royal; Find out what happened

The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, was previously known as the Duchess of Cambridge. She was given this name when she married Prince William. But originally the title Duchess Sophie was supposed to be awarded. But because of her husband, Prince Edward, it didn’t come to fruition.

According to the Palace courtier, Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie were supposed to be Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, according to the Mirror. Normally, the younger sons of monarchs receive dukedoms when they tie the knot, but the case was different with Prince Edward. He chose Earl of Wessex, and this decision came after he supposedly saw the film Shakespeare in Love.

A Buckingham Palace insider told The Telegraph in 2010 that Prince Edward would become Duke of Cambridge, but when he watched the aforementioned film, which featured a character named the Earl of Wessex, the prince liked the sound of it and asked Queen if he could have that title.

During King Charles’ accession, the couple’s titles were changed to Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. This title was previously given to the late Prince Philip. Prince Edward received this title on his 59th birthday on March 10, 2023. He became His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.

According to the publication’s report, Prince Edward’s title is not hereditary but a life peerage, so it reverts to the crown upon his death and is not passed down to his son James, Earl of Wessex, who is Lady Louise’s younger sibling Windsor.

Speaking to The Times about her decision not to use the title “His/Her Royal Highness” for her children, Sophie said: “We try to raise them with the understanding that they will most likely have to work for a living.” Hence we decided not to use HRH titles. You have them and can decide to use them from the age of 18, but I think that is highly unlikely.”
