Keanu Reeves’ 8 million sci-fi franchise starter is getting a new streaming home

The Matrix is heading to a new streaming home shortly after celebrating its 25th cinema anniversary.



Per Paramount+, 1999s The Matrix starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving is official The switch to the streaming platform begins on December 1st. Although The Matrix is already available through a number of different outlets. This is the first time Paramount+ fans will be able to watch the film on their favorite platform.

1999s The Matrix was written and directed by the Wachowskis and starred Reeves Thomas A. Anderson, a humble computer programmer who becomes embroiled in a world of digital fantasy and post-apocalyptic horror when he discovers the existence of the Matrix, not to mention his own true identity as Neo. After escaping the digital dreamscape in which he and the majority of humanity are trapped, Neo meets his fellow freedom fighters, confronts the real state of the world, and leads the charge against humanity’s machine overlords. The first film became an instant hit with critics and audiences upon its release, receiving rave reviews amid a torrent of money, grossing over $467 million against a budget of $63 million.



The Matrix spawned a major franchise

Aside from popularizing various filmmaking techniques such as “bullet-time” effects captured using a series of rotating cameras, The Matrix marked the start of a long-running franchise that includes three feature film sequels and numerous animated and comic book-related stories. The first two sequels, The Matrix reloaded And The Matrix Revolutions were both released in 2003, although neither made nearly the same impression on audiences and critics as the original. The latest entry in the franchise, 2021 The Matrix Resurrectionsreceived mostly mediocre to positive reviews from critics and audiences.

The 25th anniversary screening of The Matrix showcases its visual spectacle but, more importantly, allows viewers to share the experience together.

In September, The Matrix celebrated its 25th anniversary by returning to the big screen for a limited theatrical release. Ahead of the milestone anniversary, Reeves spoke about the personal impact the franchise has had on him, saying in an interview: “The Matrix changed my life.”

Reeves continued, “And then over those years it changed so many other people’s lives in really positive and great ways… As an artist, that’s what you hope for when you get to make a movie or tell a story. And so.” When you talk about those years and the amount of people I met, who said to me and who I was touched by The Matrix in such a positive way…it’s the best.”

The Matrix will be available to stream on Paramount+ starting December 1st.
