Kentucky launches website to help patients find medical cannabis providers

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) – The next step in making medical marijuana a reality in Kentucky is finding an authorized healthcare provider to help eligible patients obtain a medical marijuana card.

This next step is now active and online through the Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis.

It’s a directory called Find a Practitioner that you can search.

WKYT used this directory and found two practitioners who opened their offices solely to help patients find medical marijuana as an option.

James Bramel found a healthcare provider to help with bone pain. He seeks relief through medical cannabis.

“I had a problem with painkillers for a while and I…marijuana is a good option for me,” Bramel said.

Bramel found Katherine Waugh – a nurse at Practical Healthcare.

The online practitioner directory where you can find a provider like Waugh is now live.

As of Monday afternoon, Waugh had six patients like Bramel seeking medical cannabis as an option for pain relief.

“I am excited because I will change people’s lives and improve their quality of life by certifying them for medical cannabis,” Waugh said.

Nurse Christy McCoy is another healthcare provider we found in the directory.

Her motivation for moving into this area of medical practice was her mother. 88-year-old mother Janey Collins was diagnosed with cancer two years ago.

“I was talking to my mom and one of her friends and they said, ‘Gosh, we heard medical marijuana is coming to Kentucky.’ Would it work for me?’” McCoy said.

As Kentucky moves into these new frontiers, we asked McVoy if she has any concerns about medical cannabis abuse.

“It’s our responsibility as medical professionals to figure this out,” McCoy said.

According to the state Office of Medical Cannabis, medical cannabis disorders include any form of cancer, chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, chronic nausea or post-traumatic stress disorder.
