There was a lot of excitement in the Engleburg Elementary School gym.

“It means a lot to me to be here in Milwaukee this morning giving out coats in the winter because it’s super cold,” Bucks forward Khris Middleton said during a coat giveaway hosted by the Milwaukee Bucks and United Healthcare.

“Does it make you feel special that they donated these nice warm coats?” WISN 12 News Zoie Henry asked the students at the coat raffle.

“Yeah, because they’re comfortable and you could probably sleep there,” said Alaiah Dockery, a fifth-grader in Engleburg.

In addition to 300 new coats for the winter, United Healthcare and Engleburg unveiled the school’s brand new “Hygiene Locker.” It is equipped with everyday items that many people take for granted. Students now have them right at their fingertips.

“Warm gloves, hygiene products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shower gel and lotion. Lotion and deodorant are a must this time of year,” said Christine Scott, the school nurse.

According to United Healthcare, many low-income families cannot afford all of the things the nurse mentioned. It said one in 10 Americans currently lives in poverty, and in Wisconsin the figure is 11%.

“Make sure they feel safe and comfortable here at school so they don’t have to worry about their cold toes and can concentrate on math. You don’t have to worry. I can’t answer that question because.” “When I lift my arm, it gives off a bad smell,” Scott said.

Personal care items and warm coats make children grateful for kind hearts.

“Tell me how you feel about this,” Henry said to a student.

“Really, really happy. It’s really shocking,” said Jayde Campbell.

The school nurse said the school is also accepting personal hygiene donations to maintain the new locker.
