Toronto-based virtual production studio Dark Slope (pictured) and green energy provider Bullfrog Power are teaming up to offer Dark Slope customers an easy way to make their productions more environmentally friendly.

Customers will have the opportunity to have Bullfrog offset their electricity usage at Dark Slope facilities by injecting the same amount of green energy back into the grid. This means manufacturers can essentially write off 100% of their greenhouse gas emissions through an accountability tool called a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC).

RECs certify the amount of renewable electricity that comes from low- to zero-emission sources. They are used around the world to help companies demonstrate that they have reduced their Scope 2 emissions, which come primarily from indirect purchases of electricity, heating and cooling, says Alex Onwudiwe, sales and account manager at Bullfrog Power . RECs can be used to verify that zero/low emissions renewable electricity sources have been used (or in this case offset), which is particularly useful when broadcasters require an accounting of a production’s emissions. Companies can point to their RECs as proof that they are using zero-emission electricity.

Dark Slope also offers its customers access to “an archive of information on green production, carbon calculators and sustainable practices” to help them become familiar with sustainability best practices.

As for Dark Slope itself, the company has an agreement to use Bullfrog’s clean electricity to power its back-office operations and studio energy for all original productions shot in-house. Dark Slope is the first recording studio in Canada to sign such an agreement with Bullfrog.
