Kingsroad video game will contain “bloody and sexual scenes.”

Video games based on game of Thrones have been a stroke of luck over the years. Telltale’s series of story-based adventure games was pretty popular, but generally we got mobile games like this too Game of Thrones: Conquestthat didn’t make much of an impact.

South Korean developer Netmarble is trying again Game of Thrones: Kingsroad. This game is more like an active adventure title. In the trailer, which you can watch above, you fight as Jon Snow against enemies beyond the Wall. And developer Moon Jun-ki makes it sound like there’s a lot more we haven’t seen yet.

“We prioritized what the fans wanted to see. We believe fans want to explore the open world with the characters they know,” Moon said at the G-Star 2024 gaming convention Korea JoongAng Daily. According to Moon, the game contains many “bloody and sexual scenes” in keeping with the character of the original series. “The story of the main characters may be different from the original story, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel like a ‘Game of Thrones’ story,” said executive producer Jang Hyun-il. “game of Thrones has its violent and sexual character and we try to integrate this character into the main scenario.”

Of course there is more game of Thrones than sex and violence, but that’s definitely part of the experience. My biggest question is whether it’s available as a mobile game Game of Thrones: Kingsroad can overcome the smallness that seems to keep such games from breaking into the broader culture. You can also play it on a computer, and the developers emphasized that it supports “full manual controls,” as opposed to the automatic controls these types of games sometimes use. But whether that’s enough to really get people excited remains to be seen.

Jang says that Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is “70 percent completed”, but there are “still unclear aspects” to be clarified. There is currently no set release date, although Moon Jun-ki said that they plan to release the game in Western countries first, as “Asian players tend to consume content more quickly.”

“We plan to launch in the West first, make any changes to the game and release it in the (Asian) region soon after.”

I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this statement. Korea JoongAng Daily posits that this publishing strategy should “give comparatively slower Western gamers a decent head start, allowing them to finish the title before too many competitors around the world plow through it and spoil the material.” Should I be offended that Western gamers like me, considered slow when it comes to playing and competing? I have to deal with that.

In any case, I think so Game of Thrones: Kingsroad looks like a more robust gaming experience than many others game of Thrones Games that have come out before, but the proof will be in the pudding whenever it comes out.
