It was a full house at Caldwell City Hall Monday night as the council meeting discussed the possible continuation of a proposed hotel project near the rodeo grounds.

“I have exhibited at this trade fair for several years in the past. I have a great passion for agriculture and what happens at this fair. It’s very important to me that I at least try to get my voice out there,” said a young local in attendance.

But despite several speaking out against the project, the council decided to approve a memorandum of understanding, angering and confusing many locals.

Another angry local exclaimed: “You are supposed to represent the wishes of our community and people. They clearly just showed that they don’t.”

“No one who spoke was pro-movement,” another continued.

But a local says it may not be the end of the world that this MoU has been approved.

The gentleman explained: “A statement of intent or interest states that we are interested. Let’s explore this. It is a good faith agreement to move forward together to investigate this. This is not a contract.”

“So the community needs to engage in meaningful and non-controversial ways. How can we make our voices heard and participate in this process,” the man concluded.

With the approval of the MoU, the project details will now be further discussed to create a contract, which will be discussed in a future meeting.
