Liberty Bowl exceeds updated projections

We’re getting closer and closer to the truth, but for now we’re still speculating wildly about which bowl game the Texas Tech football team might be headed to later this month.

It’s been a pretty crazy week for the Red Raiders, losing and replacing both offensive and defensive coordinators and an 18-player 2025 recruiting class with a late flip from Connor Carty, an offensive lineman who was previously at Texas A&M was committed, graduated.

This has all happened since Saturday and there is still one more game left this season for the current Texas Tech roster and staff. Which game will that be? Here’s another round of predictions from around the country.

Updated options for Texas Tech football bowl games

First, let’s take a look at the experts we highlight each week, including networks Action Network, CBS Sports, ESPN and 247Sports. There have been several updates since Tuesday’s glitch.

247Sports: First Responder Bowl

Brad Crawford had Tech go to the Texas Bowl earlier this week. The 247Sports writer now has the Red Raiders facing UTSA in the First Responder Bowl, which won’t be played until January 3rd in Dallas. This would be the first-ever meeting between the Red Raiders and Road Runners and would also feature UTSA coaches Joey McGuire and Jeff Traylor, who appeared together on the cover of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football in 2022.

Action Network: Armed Forces Bowl

Brett McMurphy’s updated projections released Wednesday still have Texas Tech facing Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 27 in Fort Worth. The teams have played each other once before in the 2004 Houston Bowl.

The Athletic/New York Times: Rate Bowl

We begin our look at new outlets with Scott Dochterman and Stewart Mandel of The Athletic sending Texas Tech to the Rate Bowl on Dec. 26 to challenge Rutgers. They have the Red Raiders pegged as the No. 6 team in the Big 12 to win this matchup.

Tribune Report: Liberty Bowl

One of the few predictions that puts Texas Tech outside of the state of Texas comes from Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon. He has Tech returning to the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 27 to face Missouri. Tech last played in the Liberty Bowl in 2021 under interim coach Sonny Cumbie, which defeated Mike Leach’s Mississippi State squad.

Sports Illustrated: First Responder Bowl

Sports Illustrated’s Patrick Andres also has Texas Tech going to the First Responder Bowl. But he’ll let Tech face North Carolina, which is currently between head coaches after not retaining Mack Brown. This would be the first meeting between the Red Raiders and Tar Heels since 1980.

Guaranteed Price Bowl – Thursday, December 26th; 4:30 p.m.; Phoenix

Lockheed Martin Armed Forced Bowl – Friday, December 27th; 11 a.m. or 2:30 p.m.; Fort Worth

AutoZone Liberty Bowl – Friday, December 27th; 6 p.m.; Memphis

Pop Tarts Bowl – Saturday, December 28th; 2:30 p.m.; Orlando

Valero Alamo bowl – Saturday, December 28th; 6:30 p.m.; San Antonio

Texas Bowl – Tuesday, December 31st; 2:30 p.m.; Houston
