Lighthorse police are investigating a double murder and suicide on the reservation

COWETA, Okla. – Two people were found dead with gunshot wounds in a home near 11th and Highway 51 on Sunday, December 1st. Muscogee Nation Lighthorse police identified the victims as Jimmy and Jaclyn Maxey. The victims were discovered by their three children after they returned home from church. The children contacted their aunt, who immediately reported the discovery to the police.

Coweta Police Chief Mike Bell said two of the children were under 10 years old. He also explained that the Lighthorse Muscogee Nation took over the investigation because the deceased victims were tribal citizens.

Lighthorse investigators and the Nation could not confirm the tribal citizenship status of the parents and children at this time due to the sensitive nature of the case. However, MCN spokesman Jason Salsman said Lighthorse could only be involved in the ongoing investigation if anyone involved was a Mvskoke citizen.

Although the motive for the killings has not yet been determined, Salsman noted that this time of year can be difficult for people with mental health issues.

“This time of year, the holidays are truly a joyful time for many people, but for some it is a very difficult time,” Salsman said. “If you have a hard time during the holidays, there are people who will talk to you. We have resources at the nation. Call 988 or contact our Behavioral Health Department to speak to a representative. You are not alone, you have resources, the nation cares about the people and citizens who live on the reservation.”

The telephone number, 988is the 24/7 lifeline for suicides and crises. Advisors are available to talk, text or instant message. The conversations are free and confidential. The nation also offers behavioral health services. Further information can be found at the health authorities website. MCN Health can also be reached at 918-756-0310.

Lighthorse is currently awaiting a coroner’s report. Salsman said further details of the investigation will be released once the report is completed. Mvskoke Media will continue to report as more details become available.
