How cold does it have to be to cancel school?

Based on the numbers:

According to Atlanta Public Schools, the following guidelines are used to determine when it becomes too cold for normal operations:

  • Above 60 degrees: No restrictions
  • Below 60 degrees: jacket and/or long sleeves recommended
  • Below 50 degrees: Coat and long pants are recommended
  • Below 40 degrees: Gloves and hats as well as the items mentioned above
  • Below 35 degrees: indoor break and physical education lessons

Children with health conditions such as asthma may receive special precautions during cold weather.

School leaders also consider wind chill and the possibility of frostbite when deciding whether to cancel school. Unfortunately, there is no “magic number” on the thermostat that you can press.
