LIVE UPDATES: Brazoria County deputy killed in Houston, manhunt for shooter

A source confirms that a Brazoria County deputy has died after being shot in Houston on Wednesday.

There is a heavy police presence on Stella Link Road near the I-610 South Loop.

The suspect remains at large and a manhunt is underway.

2:12 p.m.: A Blue Alert has been issued for 56-year-old Robert Lee Davis III, also known as Sean Christopher Davis, for the fatal shooting of Deputy Sheriff Jesus Jesse Vargas on Stella Link Road.

Davis was last seen wearing a blue Nike hoodie with wire Nike lettering on the front, blue jeans and blue sneakers.

He is described as having black hair and brown eyes, standing 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds.

14 o’clock: Press conference held to provide updates.

Sheriff’s Deputy Jesus Jesse Vargas was identified as the officer who was shot. He was trying to serve an arrest warrant for aggravated assault against a repeat violent offender.

The suspect shot at Deputy Vargas as he approached to serve the warrant, officials said. Vargas was a 17-year veteran of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office and had a wife and three children.

Various law enforcement agencies are on scene, including the Houston Police Department, which is leading the investigation.

A fence was erected with roadblocks using barricades. K9 units and DPS helicopters are helping with the search.

1:49 p.m.: A source confirms the Brazoria County deputy who was shot in the head has died.

1:35 p.m.: As FOX 26’s Damali Keith reports, investigators at the scene are focusing on a brown truck that has a bullet hole in it. We’re told the person the task force had an arrest warrant for fired shots from the vehicle.

1:30 p.m.: Members of several law enforcement agencies, including the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, Texas DPS and the Houston Police Department, arrived at the hospital where the officer was taken. Houston Mayor John Whitmire is also in the hospital.

12:50 p.m.: Harris County Constable Alan Rosen sent out a tweet Wednesday morning saying the officer was serving an arrest warrant. Representatives from his office and the task force are helping to find the suspect.

“We are praying for the officer who was shot this morning while serving an arrest warrant. Please pray for this officer and his family! I have assigned deputies to this task force who, along with our other law enforcement partners, are searching for the suspect.” !”

12:34 p.m.: A law enforcement source confirms that the officer injured in the shooting is a member of the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force. The agency where the officer works has not been confirmed.

12:23 p.m.: Houston police tweeted that an officer from an outside agency was shot in the 9300 block of Stella Link Road, near 610 South Loop.

According to HPD, the suspect left the scene after the officer was shot and a search is underway for him.

The officer is taken to Ben Taub Hospital. Her condition is unknown, according to HPD.
