Locals are seeing a rise in egg prices

MCLENNAN COUNTY, Texas – A recent Facebook post on What’s up Waco has sparked discussion among locals about higher egg prices. In a screenshot, the price for 18 eggs was listed as $6.10. A local farmer said the rise in egg prices was due to bird flu.

  • “The recent avian influenza outbreak has significantly impacted the egg industry as a whole, resulting in reduced supply and increased demand, particularly during the holiday season.”
  • Our local Drug Emporium sources eggs from Modern Hippie Life Farm LLC, a family-run farm, and the price is 6.50 per dozen. At HEB, something of comparable value is $6.98, and the regular jumbo quality eggs are $4.96 per dozen.
  • Modern Hippie Life Farms said some farms have started selling their eggs for $10 a dozen but will continue to sell their eggs for $6 despite rising costs.

TRANSCRIPT:

“Oh my God, it was at Walmart, it was probably $6,” said Denetrice Wiley, a McLennan County resident.

Americans see an increase at the grocery store when they add eggs to their shopping basket.

“From what I’ve seen, the eggs are really expensive, it doesn’t matter if you’re at HEB or Walmart,” Wiley said.

Our local Drug Emporium sources eggs from Modern Hippie Life Farm LLC, a family-run farm, and the price is 6.50 per dozen. At HEB, something of comparable value is $6.98, and the regular jumbo quality eggs are $4.96 a dozen. Much higher than the locals remembered years ago.

“Sometimes they were $2 a dozen, the price has gone up tremendously,” Wiley said.

According to Modern Hippie Life Farm, we’re seeing that jump right now. They said in a statement:

“The recent avian influenza outbreak has significantly impacted the egg industry as a whole, resulting in reduced supply and increased demand, particularly during the holiday season.”

They also tell me that some farms have started selling their eggs for $10 a dozen, but they will continue to sell their eggs for $6 despite rising costs.

Dominique Leh from 25News I spoke to a family who told me that they have switched from buying eggs every week to raising their own chickens.

“The cheapest and healthiest way to get a steady supply of eggs is to breed them yourself. It took a few months to get started, but the cost per week is astronomical,” said another resident, James Tolman.

But for many of us who don’t raise our own chicken, we don’t have much choice.

“We’re still going to buy them,” said resident Sharon Reed.

A few people I spoke to today told me that they have actually turned to buying eggs from their own ovum for health and financial reasons.

Modern Hippie Life Farm tells me that they keep their costs low because they grow everything they feed their chickens.

Full farm explanation from Modern Hippie Life,

“As a small, family-run farm, we are committed to providing high quality, fresh eggs to our local community. The rising costs of key inputs such as feed, electricity and nutritional supplements are undoubtedly having an impact on our operations. We have.” We have implemented measures to mitigate this increase, including careful resource management and efficient agricultural practices.

However, the recent avian flu outbreak has had a significant impact on the entire egg industry, resulting in reduced supply and increased demand, particularly during the holiday season. This has further contributed to price fluctuations in the market.

Despite these challenges, we remain true to our mission of providing delicious eggs to healthy, happy chickens. We will continue to work diligently to maintain our prices while ensuring the welfare of our flock and the satisfaction of our customers. Right now our eggs are delivered fresh to Drug Emporium in Waco Tx.
