2014 Australian Open winner Stanislas Wawrinka will open his season against Italian Lorenzo Sonego on Tuesday (January 14).

Wawrinka, 39, is making his 19th appearance in the main draw at the Australian Open but has not won a match at Melbourne Park since 2021.

Wawrinka won 10 of the 27 ATP-level matches he played in 2024. His best result came at the Stockholm Open in October, when he reached the semi-finals after knocking out Andrey Rublev.

On the other hand, the 29-year-old Sonego has not impressed on the ATP Tour since his win at the Winston-Salem Open in August. The Italian has only won five main draw matches out of the 14 matches he has played since the US Open. Sonego lost his first-round matches at the US Open, ATP Chengdu, ATP Beijing and Shanghai Masters 1000.

World number 55 Sonego started his 2025 season in Hong Kong, where he defeated sixth seed Brandon Nakashima 7-6(4), 6-3 in the first round. But he lost in the second round to Cameron Norrie 2:6, 6:4, 1:6.

He played in Auckland last week, where he beat Canadian wildcard Gabriel Diallo in a three-hour marathon in the first round. In the next round, the American Alex Michelsen beat him 7:6 (3), 6:2.

Lorenzo Sonego versus Stanislas Wawrinka in a direct duel

Stanislas Wawrinka and Lorenzo Sonego have only met once before, in the semi-finals of the ATP Umag 2023. Lorenzo Sonego was the second seed, but Wawrinka defeated him 6-3, 6-4 to reach the final. That was Wawrinka’s last ATP final.

Lorenzo Sonego vs Stanislas Wawrinka prediction

Former world No. 3 Wawrinka had not lost a first-round match in his first 16 main round matches at the Australian Open, but was eliminated in the fifth set in each of his 2023 and 2024 opening round matches.

The three-time Grand Slam champion can still surprise his opponent with his one-handed backhands. But if it comes down to five sets again, stamina could cause him problems.

Meanwhile, Sonego doesn’t have a particularly good record at the Australian Open so far. He has only won six of the twelve games he played at Melbourne Park.

The Italian achieved his best result at the Australian Open 2022 when he lost in the third round to Miomir Kecmanovic. He would hope his match against Wawrinka lasts a long time so that stamina comes into play.

Choose: Sonego wins in five sets.
