LS girls use big second quarter to defeat Baxter – Newton Daily News

SULLY – The Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team opened a close game with a great second quarter, dominating on the boards and defeating Baxter 62-38 in a non-conference game on Tuesday.

The Hawks won their home opener by a 16-5 margin in the second game and a 19-10 margin in the third. LS is now 4-0 against Baxter since 2017.

“We took steps in the right direction, but we still need to improve a lot at halftime,” said LS varsity girls basketball coach Jerry Hulsing. “We need to stop working so hard and start working smarter. It’s going to get better the more reps we get because I thought we did a better job in the second half.”

Ava Brummel

LS led 13-11 after one quarter and outscored the Bolts 14-12 in the fourth quarter. The Hawks turned the ball over 16 times but outrebounded Baxter 49-21.

Kate Harthoorn led the Hawks with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and six steals and Ava Brummel added 10 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. Harthoorn was 2 of 5 from 3-point range and Brummel shot 4 of 5 from the free throw line.

Breah Lowry scored a career-high 16 points and grabbed three rebounds, Isabelle Vos scored a career-high nine points and eight rebounds, and Brooke Harthoorn contributed five points, five rebounds and two assists. Vos was 7 of 8 from the foul line.

Alaina Roberts had three points, four rebounds, two assists and four steals and Brilynn Tice collected five rebounds and two assists.

The Hawks (1-1) shot 35.2 percent from the floor, made 3 of 12 from 3 and made 21 of 27 from the charity stripe.

Emie Tuhn

Baxter was led by Emie Tuhn with 17 points. She also had five of the team’s six assists and five of Baxter’s 12 steals. Kamdyn Krampe had 10 points and five boards in her prep debut.

Kendall Brummel added four points, five rebounds and three steals, Hannah Huffaker had five points and three rebounds and Karlee Koehler and Myah Johnston each grabbed two rebounds.

The Bolts (0-1) shot 30.2 percent from the floor, hit 3 of 22 from 3 and went 9 of 14 from the foul line. Baxter had 20 turnovers.
