LSU football beat Ole Miss in overtime, but that’s how much the Tigers have to pay the Rebels

LSU football fans stormed the field at Tiger Stadium on Saturday after Garrett Nussmeier threw a game-winning touchdown pass in overtime to knock off Ole Miss, ranked No. 8 in the nation at the time.

But LSU’s postgame victory celebration came with a big payout to the Rebels.

On Sunday, the Southeastern Conference announced that LSU (5-1, 2-0) was fined $250,000 for a second violation of the conference’s policy on access to competition areas.

LSU, which rose from No. 10 to No. 8 in the latest LBM USA Coaches Poll, will pay Ole Miss the $250,000 fine, according to SEC policy. Ole Miss (5-2, 1-2) fell from No. 8 to No. 15.

The SEC updated its competitive access policy at the conference’s spring meetings in 2023.

“Institutions must limit access to competition areas to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support staff, and duly qualified or authorized persons at all times,” the SEC’s guidance states. “For the safety of participants and spectators, spectators are not permitted to enter the competition area at any time before, during or after a competition.”

Fines range from $100,000 for the first violation, $250,000 for the second violation, and $500,000 for three or more violations. LSU’s first violation of the SEC’s policy on access to competitive surfaces occurred in February after the LSU basketball team’s upset win over No. 17 Kentucky.
