Lufthansa is offering “green fares” to long-haul passengers from December 4th

In a commercial aviation industry where sustainability is becoming an increasingly important part of large-scale decisions, airlines are looking for ways to encourage their passengers to also travel more sustainably. A notable initiative by German airline Lufthansa was the launch of its Green Fares fare, which has been booked by more than two million customers since its launch.

The premise of these tickets, launched in February 2023, is to allow passengers on short- and medium-haul flights to offset their individual flight-related CO2 emissions. The project has been a success so far: almost 190,000 tons of carbon dioxide have been offset so far, which corresponds to more than 1,300 flights from Munich to New York with Lufthansa’s Airbus A350.

Next week the program will be further developed with the introduction of Green Fares on long-haul flights from Wednesday December 4th. These can be booked in all travel classes of the German airline and enable CO2 compensation through the use of sustainable aviation fuel and contributions to climate projects, no matter where you sit on the plane.
