Main Street Moments: So many buildings so much history! | Sentinel News

I spend a lot of time to share information about the different types of companies in the city center because they are the heartbeat of our city and are fabulous! When we step back and actually look up, these beautiful, historical buildings have memories from past years.

Last week I shared some information about 726 Main Street. This is currently being renovated and it is exciting to see that it is brought back to life. I thought I would share a little story about 414 Sixth Street this week! Yes, where the Shelby Main Street office is currently located and where the sign of the Dottie is lovingly hanging.

Most of the time, it is my intention to wipe your memories by sharing tidbits over these incredible buildings. My hope is that you remember stories that grew up here, and these incredible buildings are high, as different business intenses fill them. Maybe you will tell the stories about what was once and how things have changed over the years. Imagine these historical buildings could speak – oh the stories you could tell!

Well, the complete disclosure, I shared this information in March last year when the Shelby Main Street moved into the building for the first time.

Since I originally shared this information and has been considered memories. A few months ago, some of the family members of Dottie were in Shelbyville. Unfortunately, they were here for a funeral, but that brought them to the 414 Sixth Street. They stood in front of our office and took photos. They were invited to see the room and how it had changed. It was very moving, especially when we showed them the small, handwritten note, the Dottie wrote and put a little story on the back of the door to the basement. Yes, it’s still there.

The family was wonderful and I hope that their sadness could find comfort if they know that the room is loved by their current tenants and that we love history when Dottie’s was a beauty business. Your business meant so much for many people. We still bring people in and share their stories when they worked in the beauty shop, or even worked in the beauty shop. It is a wonderful part of the cast of a building with so much history.

This is just a brief overview of this incredible building. If you have more information or want to share your stories, please feel free to send me a message! Or drop by and see the room and share your stories personally.

Let’s go …

1872-America Schre bought 410-412 Strasse, maybe with a building on it, and the lot next to it, 414-416 sixth street, from the Farmers and Traders Bank.

1902- a second building was built in 414-416 Sixth Street by the dentist MLS Buckner and his son WT Buckner. Both practiced dentistry on the upper floor and rented the lower unit as commercial space.

1907 – Both buildings were sold to John T. Logan, who placed the stone on the front so that the two buildings look like one.

1907-1940 several companies have set up a shop in the lower floors of the buildings, including the BA Logan Insurance Company, the Armstrong Insurance Agency, Morris Schuck Barbershop and the Florence Beauty Shop.

1940 – Dottie Gordon bought the building from Shelby County Bank and the Trust in the name of the estate of We Morris. Dotties Beauty Shop was opened when Ms. Gordon was only 23 years old and she had it until her death in March 2010. According to reports, the iconic sign should be sold separately from the building, but that never happened.

2010 – acquired by Gilmore Dutton and structural improvements have been completed.

2020 – Travis and Shana Hernandez bought the property.

2020-2024 continuation of structural improvements as well as windows repaired, stone repaired and pointed, shield restored, missing windows replaced and restored and painting cornice.

2024 – The Shelby Main Street will set up your office on the lower floor of the 414 Sixth Street!

Working in an older building is interesting and it certainly has its quirks, but I love it absolutely and I am so incredibly grateful that the stars are aligned at the right time and have made it possible to get in this fabulous space!

However, these historical buildings need so much care, and I am really grateful for the building owners who are still proud of the maintenance of these gemstones. We need these buildings, these keepers in our history. Many thanks to every historical building owner (trade and residence) for the preservation of these buildings and in making our community so amazing.

If you have worked in one of our historic buildings in the city center and have a timeline, would you please contact me? I would like to share it and learn more about the incredible story of our city center. Thank you very much!

There are now so many fabulous companies and opportunities to support local support in these incredible, historical buildings. Remember when you buy from a local company, whether a business or online, not only support you financially, but also show you that you love what you do! The more business we go to our local shops and restaurants, the more we help to secure your ability to stay in business.

Of course, shopping in a local company helps financially, but also supports the wider local economy and community. It is an excellent opportunity that new companies in our city center continue to open and thrive. When people see a lot of sums, they want to be part of it! Please share your friends and families about the wonderful shops we have in the city center and the great change!

I will talk about “It’s all right and dandy, but there are simply no parking spaces in the city center”. Ok, yes, we know that it is wonderful when we can go up, jump out, walk in and shop and get back into the car. However, if there are no places in the streets of the main or Washington, that’s actually a good thing! It means that people buy and dine in our city center! Support our local companies!

Please note two parking spaces with many rooms that are located directly on the Main Street. One is on the sixth and Henry Clay and the other is on the second and relevant and can be called up by Henry from Henry

Clay. Most of the time we have great weather and one or two blocks can be a good thing. Think of everything you will see, maybe one of our sculptures, our community fliesen wall paintings, perhaps a shop that you have never seen before. Maybe you get a sweet treat or coffee, or you can come across someone you haven’t seen for some time and take a moment or two to catch up. To be in a smaller community has so many advantages!

If you have to park and go, you can admire these amazing historical buildings. They are like works of art! Another great advantage for walking around!

Another way to enjoy the beauty of the historic buildings is to assign ourselves to one of our events in the city center. Yes, I will take another opportunity to share our list of upcoming events so that you do not miss the fun!
